Exhibition Introduction

The Texture of Light presents a poetic convergence of light, material, and time through three bodies of work by media artist Paul C.—The Canvas of Light, Bit Doza Series 1, and Pixel Light. These works explore the ephemeral yet intimate relationships between nature and digital technology, object and memory, and tradition and innovation.

Unfolding across three floors, the exhibition is thematically structured to reflect the temporal and emotional dimensions of light: Flashback of Light, located on the basement level, evokes the lingering afterimages of past illuminations; Memories of Light, on the ground floor, captures the emotional impressions light leaves on material and memory; and Rhythm of Light, on the upper floor, explores the dynamic, almost musical quality of light in motion.

Hosted at KUMHO ALVER, one of Korea’s most prominent venues for contemporary and experimental art, the exhibition offers a rare opportunity to experience Paul C.’s media works in profound dialogue with light and time.

01. The Canvas of Light series

Mixed Media, Lighting, Sensor, Sound, Dimensions Variable, 2023

Through the movement of light within a square frame, the sculptures inside begin to reveal a shifting interplay of light and shadow—visualizing the passage of time and metaphorizing the quiet existence of objects within it. Rather than capturing a single moment, the work continuously traces a path through meditation, recording the layered presence of ‘the present moment’ as a series of meaningful instants unfolding in real time.

02. Bit Doza

Interactive Holo-Ceramics (Optical fiber, motor & controller, stainless steel, glass, LED), 2014/2025

Bit Doza (Bit-Pottery) is a digital craft work that pays homage to the old masters of world-class Korean ceramics. It is a modern reinterpretation by the 21st-century descendants of traditional artisans.

Inside a modern reimagination of the Sabang table from the Joseon Dynasty, this work physically interprets a digital “light porcelain” form—realized through the afterimage of light generated by rotating fiber-optic ceramic reliefs on a spinning wheel.

We recreated a luminous sphere using the techniques of traditional ceramics—mimicking the act of forming soil into shape on a spinning wheel. The holographic porcelain, embedded with blue beads, becomes a metaphor for soil and the generational endurance of artisans. As viewers approach, the white glaze turns red, evoking the intense firing process endured by past masters.

Rather than using actual soil, the series explores the materiality of ceramics through light—offering a microscopic and metaphorical perspective via optical afterimages. It reexamines our perception of matter by replacing clay with light, inviting reflection on the evolution of craftsmanship.

03. Pixel Light

Mixed media (solar-powered LCD display modules, lighting), 2025

The artwork is an interactive installation mediated by sunlight. Each module—composed of a small solar panel and an LCD display—forms either typographic or sculptural elements. These modules respond to changes in natural light, flickering, disappearing, and reappearing in a continuous loop.

Breathing life into static forms, the work visualizes a sense of vitality that shifts in real time—revealing the intersection between natural light and digital signals. It transforms the flow of energy into a dynamic presence, as if the piece itself were alive.

No longer a fixed image, the artwork functions as a living organism that interacts with its environment, continuously reconstructing its meaning. In this ever-changing system, light becomes memory, movement, and a quiet language flowing between nature and code.
