Exhibition Introduction

Media artist Paul C. is both an artist and a new media designer specializing in convergence design. As the founder of VEAM Interactive and Vinyl Group, he is recognized as a leading figure in the new media art scene, having received all three of the world’s top design awards—iF, Red Dot, and IDEA. Known for consistently pushing the boundaries between art and design, Paul C. now presents his first solo exhibition solely under his own name—not as part of a commercial collaboration, but as a media artist in his own right. The exhibition is titled NEWance, a coined term that reflects the artist’s pursuit of new expressions and techniques previously unexplored in his commercial work.

In this exhibition, Paul C. explores the aesthetic tension and harmony found in the contrast between light and shadow. While light illuminates and gives energy to all things, it is through the presence of darkness that light becomes fully perceptible—an interplay the artist captures with nuance. Rather than focusing on newness or strangeness for their own sake, Paul C. centers on the contrast that renders the familiar unfamiliar—emphasizing the original essence of what exists. His unique perspective is manifested through a balance between digital imagery, rendered in media, and analog objects, navigating the boundary between reality and the surreal.

01. Just One Day, Life

Single Channel Video(04’00”), Mixed Media, Object, Plant, 65" Display, Sound, Lighting, 2022

This series blends the real and the unreal into a surreal expression, layered with a temporal narrative. By combining tangible objects and spaces with intangible shadow imagery, the work creates subtly surreal scenes using a complex façade technique. Drawing from the everyday interplay between light and shadow through a window, it quietly reflects on the parallel between a single day and the entirety of a human life.

02. Flash Back, Memory

Single Channel Video(04’00”), Mixed Media, MDF Panel, Wooden Dowels, Glass, 85” Display(2ea), Sound, Lighting, Dimensions Variable

“Memories are remembered differently by each person.”

This work begins with that idea, reflecting on how shared experiences diverge in recollection.Through a rotating interplay of translucent fabrics and shadows, it reveals that even when people seem to miss each other, they are in fact continuously encountering one another. Seated alone, facing the window, the viewer enters a first-person media perspective—only to later discover the layered relationship between the image inside the window (my memory) and the shadow behind it (the other’s memory). Designed as a layered structure of video and physical objects, the piece evokes the quiet complexity of memory and perception.
